Why Australian

What is a Labradoodle?  What is an Australian Labradoodle?  Is there a difference?  What is an F1?  What is an F1B?  What about all the breed associations?  Why do some breeders list so many logos?

The only logo sanctioned by the breed founders in Australia is the ASD trademark logo.  This logo is the registered trademark of the breed founders Tegan Park and Rutland Manor (The TIG Group) in Australia.  The right to display this logo is awarded only to those breeders who meet and agree to uphold their standards in breeding the authentic Australian Labradoodle.

The genuine Australian Labradoodle is the dog which first captured the hearts of people all over the world.  As they became extremely popular, literally hundreds of new breeders surfaced, many of them starting at the beginning by crossing a Labrador with a Poodle, still using the Labradoodle name.

The  authentic Australian Labradoodle is that which has been under development in Australia since the 1970’s as defined on our Labradoodle History page.  Early generation crosses are defined as follows:

F1:  -  The F1 is the first generation cross of a Standard Poodle bred to a Labrador Retriever.  Most have hair coats and shed; very few are truly allergy friendly.  Some can be hyperactive in temperament.

F1B: -  An F1B is the result of an F1 Labradoodle being bred back to a Poodle, as a shortcut to producing the non shedding allergy friendly coat which is present in 99% of the authentic Australian Labradoodles.  With the predominance of poodle in these puppies, the temperament so carefully developed over many years by the founders of the breed can often be sacrificed.

Please understand that we are not against the early generation crosses.  We love all dogs, just happen to have made a personal decision to breed the genuine Australian Labradoodle, and have imported breeding stock from the founders in order to bring you the best possible authentic Australian Labradoodle puppies.  A Sky View Labradoodle remains in touch with our early generation friends, and is personally grateful to those who have been so supportive of our efforts to produce top quality multi-gen Labradoodles.  Many of these breeders also health test their breeding stock, and are making every effort to produce the best possible early generation Labradoodle dogs.

The breed founders, Tegan Park and Rutland Manor, see a risk in continuing to breed Lab/Poodle mixes.  The two breeds share a number of serious hereditary diseases.  Many  of these are recessive (can skip many generations), so health testing is of limited value and will not in itself guarantee that affected offspring will not result, if two parents carrying the same recessive gene happen to be bred.

The Founders of the Australian Labradoodle met this challenge by carefully infusing other breeds at specific intervals.  This not only widened the gene pool, but by carefully infusing breeds that did not tend to carry the disorders common to Labs and Poodles, they have decreased the probability of shared diseases surfacing.  The Breed Founders do not feel that it is possible to duplicate this by breeding successive generations of the Labrador Retriever to the Poodle.

Our research led us to believe, as do the Breed Founders, that the authentic Australian Labradoodle is a dog without peer.  It is the dog that has taken the world by storm.  The ASD logo represents our pledge to continue the devotion and years of work which the Founders poured into their mission to develop the greatest dog ever known.

Something that weighed heavily in our decision to breed the authentic Australian Labradoodles was finding online listings of early generation Labradoodles in kill shelters across the country.  Why?  It appears that people adopting an early generation Labradoodle were not aware of the difference between the two breeds.  Again, we do not find fault with earlier generation crosses.  We know many people who are madly in love with their early Labradoodles.   We just need to make you aware that they are two different breeds, so that you can make an informed choice.

Early generation Labradoodles, sometimes referred to as “copy” Labradoodles, have been sold in the US for prices comparable to those paid for the genuine Australian Labradoodle.

We hope our web site is helpful to you in making an informed decision when adopting your next canine family member.  Whatever your decision in the type of dog to adopt, we urge you to buy from a responsible breeder, and to make sure that the parents have been health tested, to reduce the risk of genetically inherited diseases.  We strongly suggest that you not buy puppy mill animals, often found in pet stores, as they tend not to be from health tested breeding stock and can be kept in less than ideal conditions, also promoting disease.  They may not have been socialized, which may lead to behavioral or emotional problems.  Do your research on breed characteristics, adopt the animal most likely to be a good fit in your family, make the commitment to see that the dog is properly socialized and trained, and you will be well on your way to having a happy life with your new pet.
